For the Lord humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had made Judah act sinfully and had been very unfaithful to the Lord.
He had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah; all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel.
Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand.
(“Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”)
For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see.
For you have kept the statutes of Omri, and all the works of the house of Ahab; and you have walked in their counsels, that I may make you a desolation, and your inhabitants a hissing; so you shall bear the scorn of my people.”
Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment, because he was determined to go after filth.
One's pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.
he gave them into the hand of the nations, so that those who hated them ruled over them. Their enemies oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their power. Many times he delivered them, but they were rebellious in their purposes and were brought low through their iniquity.
The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts.
The sojourner who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower.
And when Moses saw that the people had broken loose (for Aaron had let them break loose, to the derision of their enemies),
He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
