Crash follows hard on crash; the whole land is laid waste. Suddenly my tents are laid waste, my curtains in a moment.
Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me.
They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,
And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
Alas for the day! For the day of the Lord is near, and as destruction from the Almighty it comes.
When anguish comes, they will seek peace, but there shall be none. Disaster comes upon disaster; rumor follows rumor. They seek a vision from the prophet, while the law perishes from the priest and counsel from the elders.
“For thus says the Lord God: How much more when I send upon Jerusalem my four disastrous acts of judgment, sword, famine, wild beasts, and pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast!
panic and pitfall have come upon us, devastation and destruction;
Let those be put to shame who persecute me, but let me not be put to shame; let them be dismayed, but let me not be dismayed; bring upon them the day of disaster; destroy them with double destruction!
Woe is me because of my hurt! My wound is grievous. But I said, “Truly this is an affliction, and I must bear it.” My tent is destroyed, and all my cords are broken; my children have gone from me, and they are not; there is no one to spread my tent again and to set up my curtains.
Behold Zion, the city of our appointed feasts! Your eyes will see Jerusalem, an untroubled habitation, an immovable tent, whose stakes will never be plucked up, nor will any of its cords be broken.
Wail, for the day of the Lord is near; as destruction from the Almighty it will come!
then I also will walk contrary to you, and I myself will strike you sevenfold for your sins.
“Then if you walk contrary to me and will not listen to me, I will continue striking you, sevenfold for your sins.
And if in spite of this you will not listen to me, then I will discipline you again sevenfold for your sins,
For the Lord had said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do with you.’”
I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction; the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble.
He has laid waste his booth like a garden, laid in ruins his meeting place; the Lord has made Zion forget festival and Sabbath, and in his fierce indignation has spurned king and priest. The Lord has scorned his altar, disowned his sanctuary; he has delivered into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; they raised a clamor in the house of the Lord as on the day of festival. The Lord determined to lay in ruins the wall of the daughter of Zion; he stretched out the measuring line; he did not restrain his hand from destroying; he caused rampart and wall to lament; they languished together. Her gates have sunk into the ground; he has ruined and broken her bars; her king and princes are among the nations; the law is no more, and her prophets find no vision from the Lord.
Raise a standard toward Zion, flee for safety, stay not, for I bring disaster from the north, and great destruction.
“Enlarge the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; do not hold back; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes.
These two things shall come to you in a moment, in one day; the loss of children and widowhood shall come upon you in full measure, in spite of your many sorceries and the great power of your enchantments.
Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and Amen!
“Get away from the midst of this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.” And they fell on their faces.
“Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.”
then I will walk contrary to you in fury, and I myself will discipline you sevenfold for your sins.
