But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land,
Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth.
Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.”
Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.
Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. And he said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.” But she answered him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs.” And he said to her, “For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter.”
In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ
But who are you, O man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, “Why have you made me like this?”
For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”
After many days the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth.” So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria.
