And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.

And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them?
For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women raped. Half of the city shall go out into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.
In the whole land, declares the Lord, two thirds shall be cut off and perish, and one third shall be left alive.
And though a tenth remain in it, it will be burned again, like a terebinth or an oak, whose stump remains when it is felled.” The holy seed is its stump.
