And Balaam took up his discourse and said, “From Aram Balak has brought me, the king of Moab from the eastern mountains: ‘Come, curse Jacob for me, and come, denounce Israel!’
because they did not meet you with bread and with water on the way, when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you.
and he took up his discourse and said, “The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor, the oracle of the man whose eye is opened,
And Balaam took up his discourse and said, “Rise, Balak, and hear; give ear to me, O son of Zippor:
sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor at Pethor, which is near the River in the land of the people of Amaw, to call him, saying, “Behold, a people has come out of Egypt. They cover the face of the earth, and they are dwelling opposite me. Come now, curse this people for me, since they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them from the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”
In that day they shall take up a taunt song against you and moan bitterly, and say, “We are utterly ruined; he changes the portion of my people; how he removes it from me! To an apostate he allots our fields.”
I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old,
And Job again took up his discourse, and said:
And he took up his discourse and said, “Alas, who shall live when God does this?
And he took up his discourse and said, “The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor, the oracle of the man whose eye is opened,
And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away.
He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”
Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, a curse that is causeless does not alight.
And Job again took up his discourse, and said:
And next to him among the three mighty men was Eleazar the son of Dodo, son of Ahohi. He was with David when they defied the Philistines who were gathered there for battle, and the men of Israel withdrew.
This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.”
Shall not all these take up their taunt against him, with scoffing and riddles for him, and say, “Woe to him who heaps up what is not his own— for how long?— and loads himself with pledges!”
Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! They are saying of me, ‘Is he not a maker of parables?’”
“Son of man, propound a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel;
And when he taunted Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimei, David's brother, struck him down.
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.”
And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel. And the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father's house free in Israel.” And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
And the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may fight together.”
And he looked on the Kenite, and took up his discourse and said, “Enduring is your dwelling place, and your nest is set in the rock.
for I will surely do you great honor, and whatever you say to me I will do. Come, curse this people for me.’”
‘Behold, a people has come out of Egypt, and it covers the face of the earth. Now come, curse them for me. Perhaps I shall be able to fight against them and drive them out.’”
and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and gone to Paddan-aram.
Arise, go to Paddan-aram to the house of Bethuel your mother's father, and take as your wife from there one of the daughters of Laban your mother's brother.
The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram.
