Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord,
“How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?
They say to God, ‘Depart from us! We do not desire the knowledge of your ways. What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit do we get if we pray to him?’
For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.
When its boughs are dry, they are broken; women come and make a fire of them. For this is a people without discernment; therefore he who made them will not have compassion on them; he who formed them will show them no favor.
“You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.” Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth at him.
For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
For they are a rebellious people, lying children, children unwilling to hear the instruction of the Lord; who say to the seers, “Do not see,” and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us what is right; speak to us smooth things, prophesy illusions, leave the way, turn aside from the path, let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel.” Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel, “Because you despise this word and trust in oppression and perverseness and rely on them,
and you say, “How I hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof!
But to the wicked God says: “What right have you to recite my statutes or take my covenant on your lips? For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.
