they open wide their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion.
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
They open wide their mouths against me; they say, “Aha, Aha! Our eyes have seen it!”
“All our enemies open their mouths against us;
All your enemies rail against you; they hiss, they gnash their teeth, they cry: “We have swallowed her! Ah, this is the day we longed for; now we have it; we see it!”
He is like a lion eager to tear, as a young lion lurking in ambush.
Men have gaped at me with their mouth; they have struck me insolently on the cheek; they mass themselves together against me.
Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking false testimony against Jesus that they might put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward and said, “This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to rebuild it in three days.’” And the high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer to make? Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.
Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, shedding blood, destroying lives to get dishonest gain. And her prophets have smeared whitewash for them, seeing false visions and divining lies for them, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord God,’ when the Lord has not spoken.
How long, O Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their destruction, my precious life from the lions!
Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!
All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
lest like a lion they tear my soul apart, rending it in pieces, with none to deliver.
