Remember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked, and how I bear in my heart the insults of all the many nations,
Arise, O God, defend your cause; remember how the foolish scoff at you all the day!
Remember this, O Lord, how the enemy scoffs, and a foolish people reviles your name.
For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.”
Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Let the avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants be known among the nations before our eyes! Let the groans of the prisoners come before you; according to your great power, preserve those doomed to die! Return sevenfold into the lap of our neighbors the taunts with which they have taunted you, O Lord!
You know my reproach, and my shame and my dishonor; my foes are all known to you. Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.
You have made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those around us. You have made us a byword among the nations, a laughingstock among the peoples. All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face at the sound of the taunter and reviler, at the sight of the enemy and the avenger.
