And Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him,
He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first.
and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.”
From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord.
The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them. And the house of Joseph scouted out Bethel. (Now the name of the city was formerly Luz.) And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, “Please show us the way into the city, and we will deal kindly with you.” And he showed them the way into the city. And they struck the city with the edge of the sword, but they let the man and all his family go. And the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city and called its name Luz. That is its name to this day.
And Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me,
